Question for Experts

I have recently started to reread Atlas Shrugged. I first read it when I was 14, and then again 40 years later. I guess the third time is the charm. :-) Here's my question: I have noticed the repeated spelling of the word "may" spelled as "mAy" Can anyone offer any insight? Thank you very much.
