I do think that is the standard to measure against and is an argument a lot of people use for hardening the grid and equipment critical for things like water and communications. Maybe they should spend on that and just let the middle east sort itself out...

The storm of 1859—known as the Carrington Event[1]—was a powerful geomagnetic solar storm during solar cycle 10 (1855–1867). A solar coronal mass ejection hit Earth's magnetosphere and induced one of the largest geomagnetic storms on record, September 1–2, 1859. The associated "white light flare" in the solar photosphere was observed and recorded by English astronomers Richard C. Carrington (1826–1875) and Richard Hodgson (1804–1872).

Studies have shown that a solar storm of this magnitude occurring today would likely cause more widespread problems for a modern and technology-dependent society.[2][3] The solar storm of 2012 was of similar magnitude, but it passed Earth's orbit without striking the planet.[4]

Solar storms can disrupt electronics, and even damage them, one sure way to protect them is a Faraday Cage, there are many variations of it on the web, the great side effect of having your stuff in a Faraday cage is it also protects you from damage from nuclear explosion EMP....:)

I read that the recent power interruptions in SF, LA and NY may have been related to "space weather." Presumably the rest of the country was protected by tinfoil hats. :-)

The too sunny earth wrecking havoc on high upon us shall be all our fault!
Al Gore was among the first to call out that we needed to collectively come together in an effort to shut down all fossil fuels and to replace it with windmills and solar panels.
But did we all listen? No-o! Too many of us who really should be in jail for our belief denials did not.
The sun will destroy us as global warming morphs into a climate change that shall freeze us and our farm crops all to death.
Is it too late? Perhaps. But then . . . maybe not.
Readers, lend me your eyes! We have one last chance. Sacrifice! Contribute all you can afford until it huts like hell to Al Gore approved emergency action organizations such as~
